THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE

The winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie was 2002’s most awarded new show on Broadway.

Over the weekend of May 2 – 4 the Un-Common Theatre Company will be bringing this singing, dancing, romancing musical to the Orpheum Theater in Foxboro Ma.

Meg Dussault of Sharon, Ma directs this show, featuring 27 talented, local young performers, that will take the audience back to the height of the Jazz age in Manhattan, 1922. With Musical Direction by Linda Barbieri of North Attleboro, Ma, Choreography by Karen Anderson of Mansfield, Ma and Orchestra Direction by Shannon Manley of Wrentham, Ma this show features over 15 high spirited and romantic musical numbers.

Based on the 1967 movie of the same name, “Thoroughly Modern Mille” tells the story of Millie Dillmount, (Sarah Shear of Mansfield, Ma) who escapes to New York City in search of a new life for herself. Millie is determined to marry her wealthy boss - whoever he may be. Bobbing her hair and assuming the modern look of a "flapper" she takes a room at the Hotel Priscilla for Women and gets a job as a stenographer at the Sincere Trust Insurance Company. In short time, she finds herself involved with Jimmy Smith (Johnny Fullerton of Mansfield, Ma), a poor but fun-loving paper-clip salesman; Miss Dorothy Brown (Katie Vincent of Mansfield, Ma), a gentle aspiring actress who never seems to have spare change; several other stage-struck young women staying at the hotel; and Muzzy van Hossmere (Rachel Johnston of Mansfield, Ma), a madcap Manhattan cabaret singer and heiress with a zest for the high life and a glamorous penthouse.

Millie's pompous but wealthy boss, whom she intends to marry, is Trevor Graydon III (David Mizzoni of Cranston, RI). But trouble comes in several respects. First, Millie is falling for Jimmy, but she fears that Jimmy is having a fling with Millie's new friend, Miss Dorothy. In addition, the hotel proprietress, the mysterious and sinister Mrs. Meers (Alina Ostrow of Franklin, Ma), and her two Chinese henchmen, Ching Ho (Lee Cohen of Sharon, Ma) and Bun Foo (Josh Marcus-Blank of Sharon, Ma) appear to be up to no good. Millie, Jimmy, and Mr. Graydon discover what Mrs. Meers is up to and move to foil her plans.

SWEENEY TODD - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Continuing the tradition of offering an opportunity for more experienced youth to try a show that they would not normally have an opportunity to be a part of, The Un-Common Theatre Company's Young Adult group is excited to announce auditions for "Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet St." as it's summer production this year.

The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!

Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, “Sweeney Todd” nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next.

Recently revived on Broadway and the subject of a new movie staring Johnny Depp, this show has rarely been performed in the past, partly due to Mr. Sondheim's complicated and brilliant musical score. The Moss hart Award wining directorial team of Christa Crewdson (Director) and Chris Charig (Musical Director) are excited to take on this task and are looking forward to meeting many hopeful auditioners.
